Measurement & Evaluation Extravaganza - Ken Phillips - Developing Valid Level 1 Evaluations

We've all heard of - even - hopefully! tried to apply - Kirkpatrick's Four Levels of Evaluation.

Afterall, the training industry has had the Kirkpatrick Four Levels of Evaulation for fifty (50) years now!

The question is, how many learning & performance professionals know how to do them right?

The research shows - not many. :-/

So I'm launching a Measurement & Evaluation Extravaganza on this blog. It's meant to help all learning & performance professionals to gain mastery over this area, and to assist ASTD Certified Professional in Learning & Performance (CPLP) candidates to prep for the CPLP Knowledge Exam.

Let's start with Kirkpatrick's Level 1 Evaluation... When should you use Level 1? What does a valid Level 1 Evaluation look like? When is it inappropriate to use Level 1?

Ken Phillips, Ph.D., CPLP - founder and President of Phillips Associates - is a learning & performance measurement & evaluation expert.

Ken has a knack for helping us regular humans understand when, where & how to measure, evaluate, summarize & report.

Ken has written a series of articles on the subject - I've included regarding Level 1 Evaluations below.

2009 ASTD International Conference & Exposition (ASTD ICE)

Greetings from the ASTD International Conference & Exposition (ASTD ICE)!

As a member of this year's conference Planning Advisory Committee (ASTD ICE PAC), I worked with Andrew Royal (Senior International Development Specialist for Mary Kay, Inc) to identify the educational content for the Facilitating Organizational Change track.

American Society for Training & Development (ASTD) International Conference & Exposition (ICE)

I'm just off an ASTD ICE Planning Advisory Committee call. We're in the process of planning the conference orientation sessions for Washington DC.

Different orientation sessions are offered for English speakers versus non-English speakers.

There are two (2) ASTD ICE sessions scheduled for English speakers.

They are:

• Saturday, May 30th, 2009 - 5:00pm to 6:15pm ET
• Sunday, May 31st, 2009 - 9:45am to 11:00am ET

The orientation is to provide new conference goers with:

• An overview of the conference resources & logistics (e.g. orientation to the Program Guide; where to go to find what information; the flow of the conference, etc.)
• Networking opportunities (we're working on some icebreakers / breakouts)
• An understanding of conference offerings & suggestions on where they can get help (e.g. how do I plan my time? what's an innogizer? where can I get coffee? how can I ship stuff home? etc.)

I'm one of the Orientation presenters both days; stop by and say "Hi!"

2009 ASTD International Conference & Exposition (ASTD ICE)

I've been on the road for the past couple of weeks, working hard but enjoying my travels immensely.

I've spent most of my time meeting and collaborating with learning & performance professionals from all over the world, including participating as a member of the planning committee for the 2009 ASTD International Conference & Exposition (ASTD ICE).

What a blast!

The committee's primary purpose is to construct the educational tracks for the conference. That means we spent quite a lot of time reviewing speaker proposals and discussing the types of educational opportunities that have worked (or not worked) at the conference in the past.

From there, we worked long hours in a training room to lay out the conference tracks and session formats.

We also spent quite a bit of time brainstorming ideas for keynote speakers and had a lot of conversation around our ideas for improving the ASTD ICE conference booklet - especially for folks visiting from outside the USA.

I am sworn to secrecy - can't say much! - but there are definite changes to some of the session delivery methods.

I'm really happy with the results - and am hoping (of course!) that ASTD ICE attendees are happy with them too!

Participation on the planning committee is a two (2) year run - which means my freshman year is this one - planning the 2009 ASTD ICE event for Washington D.C.

My senior year - graduation! - will be in planning the 2010 ASTD ICE event for home sweet home Chicago. :-)
