Employee Learning Week Recap - Thursday, December 10th, 2009 - Social Learning Statistics

The following list is a recap of how we celebrated Employee Learning Week on Thursday, December 10th, 2009:

EVENT: Virtual Training World - Social Learning Statistics from Session 2: Social Learning

AHA moments:
  • Social media applications - more than just a trend - Facebook 350 million, LinkedIn 54 million, Twitter 50+ million, Blackboard 20 million users - Gen Y / Millenials are not the only users.
  • According to the data below, even the WW II (Silent Generation) is getting in on the act - mostly because they're keeping up with their grand and great-grand kids. Utlimately, the reason doesn't matter. What's the AHA? Use of social media apps is fairly common and on the rise - across generations. To keep up, we need to design learning using models our audiences are familiar with - so social media apps should be part of our training toolkit.

Links at the bottom of the image:

http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/10/14/linkedin-flying-high-with-50-million-business-users/

http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/facebook-asks-more-than-350-million-users-around-the-world-to-personalize-their-privacy-78861127.html

http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2009/01/11/a-collection-of-soical-network-stats-for-2009/

Social media apps are important for supporting social learning. Social learning is more than just technology - it's revolutionizing the way we learn - from K-12, to higher ed, to workforce training & development.

Therefore, what are the implications to the learning profession? How must we - as learning professionals - change? evolve? adapt?

 QUOTES:
  • "It's [training] not about measuring pounds of flesh trained any more." - Tim Hill, Blackboard
  • "Scary statistic: 60% of your employees could be ready to leave when the economy improves." - Julie Norquist-Roy, CornerStone OnDemand
In other words, the metrics by which we - learning professionals - are evaluated have changed (and are changing) dramatically.

This is true of the organizations who employ us and the audiences we serve.

People now expect the organizations they work for to play an active role in their professional development. They expect growth opportunities.

Organizations expect us - learning professionals - to design & execute these types of talent development strategies.

Can you see how your function does or does not serve learning & organizational strategy?

VIDEO: Wikipedia. Think about the implications of collaboration (and collaborative technologies) and the democratization of knowledge - globally - on the learning profession.

Consider: If information is free - and freely accessible - and people leverage technologies to naturally collaborate, what is the future of the classroom? In an age of social media and social networking, and if we - as trainers - are no longer needed to act as experts, then who are we? and what is our role?

RESOURCE: A Conversation with Ed Gordon - A discussion about partnerships to accelerate innovation in education and workforce development and to integrate talent development strategies with economic development.

Convergence. It's happening with or without our consent. Insisting on old models & mindsets - conducting training the way we've always done it - is a recipe for your own extinction.

How are you rising to the challenge? Post in the comments below.

#2 I pursued #ASTD #CPLP cuz I view it as good prep for challenges of the future; I have background in IT, biz processes, #cplpchat

8:24 pm

MDOT_DCS:

Q3 - (too busy laughing to reply!) No, really - some think it's a flop? #cplpchat

8:24 pm

larrystraining:

Q3) Can you be more specific. How do they suggest it is a flop? #cplpchat

8:24 pm

trishuhl:

@SuzNet Our backgrounds are similar :-) #cplpchat

8:25 pm

SolutionSource:

@MDOT_DCS great resources - Thank YOU #cplpchat

8:25 pm

trishuhl:

@MDOT_DCS LOL Yes. That is the latest term - "a flop" #cplpchat

8:26 pm

MDOT_DCS:

@SolutionSource The 3 schools are competing to see who comes up w/ the best use of social media in classroom - we'll know in Jan! #cplpchat

8:26 pm

trishuhl:

Q3) The #PMP is more than 30 years old. I sat the exam in 2003 - there were 50k PMPs worldwide now there are 353k (in 6 years!) #cplpchat

8:26 pm

SuzNet:

#3 There is very low awareness among employers, potential candidates in our market area -- where is it catching on? #cplpchat

8:27 pm

MDOT_DCS:

@SolutionSource two more then you can rest your eyes: http://bit.ly/3aLiDb and http://bit.ly/Akn6P #cplpchat

8:27 pm

larrystraining:

Q3) Is it the fact that people can't just walk in and get the certificate for purchasing the books? #cplpchat

8:27 pm

trishuhl:

Q3) It took SHRM 10+ years to have its creds go mainstream; the #CPLP is not quite (operationally) 4 yrs old; unless u count pilot #cplpchat

8:28 pm

MDOT_DCS:

Q3 - you have to build a base of appreciation (and awareness) before it will "go viral" - not all in life is instant gratification #cplpchat

8:28 pm

trishuhl:

@SuzNet Q3) We definitely have traction with employers - I have monitored job postings on indeed.com for years and watched the +++ #cplpchat

8:28 pm

SuzNet:

@trishuhl - yup, but I've always gravitated towards the learning aspects and have morphed along the way; now I struggle with tech #cplpchat

8:28 pm

MDOT_DCS:

@trishuhl personally I count the pilot. :D #cplpchat

8:29 pm

trishuhl:

Q3) ASTD CI now posts #ASTD job board employers seeking CPLPs on its Web site - http://www.cplp.astd.org/ - look for Word doc #cplpchat

8:29 pm

trishuhl:

@MDOT_DCS LOL As you know, it was a true pilot. I count the time in dog years:-D #cplpchat

8:30 pm

MDOT_DCS:

Q1 and Q3 - having the CPLP got me a new position in favor of some very tough competition... I'm a fan! #cplpchat

8:30 pm

trishuhl:

@MDOT_DCS Agreed - and is it not incumbent upon us - the #CPLP community to assist #ASTD in doing that? Getting the word out? #cplpchat

8:30 pm

trishuhl:

15mins to go in #cplpchat #cplpchat

8:31 pm

trishuhl:

@larrystraining Agreed, Larry - and #ASTD CI has not grandfathered anybody in #cplpchat

8:31 pm

SuzNet:

Where are the biggest concentrations of CPLPs? #cplpchat

8:31 pm

MDOT_DCS:

@trishuhl ABSOLUTELY!!! Wear your pin, tell your story (give your elevator pitch)! #cplpchat

8:32 pm

trishuhl:

@SuzNet Q3) The next place the #CPLP will catch on is with the Workforce Investment Boards and on the 2010 Census #cplpchat

8:32 pm

SolutionSource:

@MDOT_DCS plz share the results #CPLPchat

8:32 pm

trishuhl:

Q3) It is because of the #ASTD #CPLP that learning & performance will be listed as a profession on the 2010 Census #cplpchat

8:33 pm

trishuhl:

@SuzNet #CPLPs are still mostly in the US - some states more than others - e.g. TX, VA, CA, IL - but lots of gobal interest. #cplpchat

8:33 pm

MDOT_DCS:

@SolutionSource It'll be my pleasure! #cplpchat

8:33 pm

SuzNet:

@MDOT_DCS @SolutionSource I second that - write a success post! #cplpchat

8:34 pm

trishuhl:

8:35 pm

MDOT_DCS:

@SuzNet Or at least a results post... LOL! (You know not every pilot project succeeds!) #cplpchat

8:35 pm

SuzNet:

@trishuhl Where's gobal? Is that a new country :)? #cplpchat

8:35 pm

larrystraining:

I use the #CPLP initials in presentations to other instructors as a contest, first person to text me what it means gets a prize. #cplpchat

8:35 pm

MDOT_DCS:

The Launch of CPLPchat

What is CPLPchat?

#CPLPchat is a place for people interested in the ASTD Certified Professional in Learning & Performance (CPLP) credential to use the social messaging service Twitter to learn from one another and discuss topics around professional certification.

The first online chat is scheduled for Wednesday, December 9th from 8:30pm to 9:30pm EST / 5:30pm to 6:30pm PST.

We hope to make CPLPchat a frequent event. Ongoing CPLPchat events will be scheduled at a later date.

How does CPLPchat work?
The “#” sign, known as a hashtag, enables you to search for #CPLPchat and participate during the discussion. You can also use live-chat services such as TweetChat and TweetGrid or even seek out #CPLPchat in Twitter search.

What do I need in order to participate?

1] Follow @CPLPchat on Twitter

2] The use of a tool like TweetChat or TweetGrid is recommended to follow the discussion.

3] If so inclined, suggest a question/topic.

4] Set aside time to participate.

5] Use the tag #CPLPchat in your responses.

Who hosts the meetings?

I've created a Twitter ID called @CPLPchat that can be shared among moderators of the discussion, any given week. To participate, you simply need to follow this user, and to respond to the prompts.

What will we talk about?

Questions and topics are now being solicited via Twitter. Submit your ideas via Twitter by adding #CPLPchat to your tweet.

While we could discuss many topics in a given evening, it is currently thought that each discussion remain focused on a single broad topic.

Topics might include: substantive content from an Area of Expertise, study preparation strategies for the Certified Professional in Learning & Performance (CPLP) credentialing program, questions about the CPLP Knowledge Exam or Work Product submission, networking opportunity for CPLPs and CPLP candidates - as well as the CPLP curious, etc.

Why use Twitter?

Twitter allows anyone and everyone to respond, and offers a simple way to collect the responses of participants. As opposed to a live audio chat, the microblog interface allows you to split your attention among studying; work; television shows; parenting and the engaging conversation via CPLPchat.

What if I miss it?

The entire discussion will be accessible by simply searching the tag #CPLPchat via Twitter Search. We will also make the transcript available.

Will you join us?

Please feel free to leave a comment (below) on Why? or Why not?

Employee Learning Week 2009

What is Employee Learning Week (ELW)?

Employee Learning Week (December 7th-11th, 2009) is an ASTD awareness campaign highlighting the important connection between learning and achieving organizational results.

This is critical, as training is more important now than ever before. The growing skills gap and the increased need to compete in today’s economy require organizations to develop a knowledgeable and highly skilled workforce.

As Daniel Pink states in his book "A Whole New Mind," today's economy demands the skills required by a 21st century workforce; a workforce that was educated (and continues to be developed) using insufficient Industrial Age methods & mentalities.

Employee Learning Week offers the perfect opportunity for organizations to address this disconnect, get involved, and highlight their commitment to lifelong learning and affecting the change necessary to support & develop a competitive workforce in this new global knowledge economy.

Government officials are getting in on the act as well. Many jurisdictions officially proclaim this week as Employee Learning Week.

Official proclamations for recognizing Employee Learning Week were secured from:
  • Gov. Dave Heineman, State of Nebraska
  • Gov. Ted Strickland, State of Ohio
  • Mayor, Lorraine H. Morton, Evanston, Illinois
  • Mayor, Mike Fahey, Omaha, Nebraska
  • Mayor, Linda M. Vaughn, Machesney Park, Illinois
  • Mayor, Donald Groesser, Ralston, Nebraska
  • Mayor, Julian Castro, San Antonio, Texas
  • Mayor, James Blinn, Papillion, Nebraska
  • and many more...!
A short list of organizations celebrating Employee Learning week include:
  • Marriott
  • Rotary International
  • Macy's
  • Polaris
  • University of Phoenix
  • Premier Bank
  • University of New Mexico
  • University Health System
  • and many more...!
Here at Owl's Ledge, we are joining the Employee Learning Week celebration and acting as a Champion of Learning by focusing on happenings in the CPLP community and programs related to the ASTD Workplace Learning & Performance Competency Model.

This is because we - learning & performance professionals - have to first become healthy, strong & model the 21st century characteristics ourselves before we can effectively assist the organizations we serve in developing their competitive workforce.

Join us this week for:
  • Daily events, resources, learning activities & games
  • Special Twitter-based discussions on learning & performance
I'm calling upon all of my learning & performance peers - worldwide - to join us in advancing our profession forward - from reactive & tactical, to strategic & responsive.

From measuring our own performance on number of training programs designed, developed & delivered (and how many butts we got into seats) - to helping to transform our organizations through innovation, globalization & strategic enablement.

The time is now!

Watch this blog for information on how you can get involved!

CPLP: Getting Help vs Having Someone Do It For You

It's unfortunate.

There's a myth running around regarding seeking help - any help - with either phase of the Certified Professional in Learning & Performance (CPLP) credentialing process -

The myth is: Seeking assistance/help is considered "cheating."

This seems to be especially true of Phase II: CPLP Work Product Submission.

Let's be clear - the myth is unfounded.

It's simply not true.

We all need guidance / assistance from time to time in our lives. Why should getting / receiving support during a professional certification process be any different than the coaching / support we receive at school, at home, at work, while playing sports, etc?

The difference is - and there's a BIG difference - receiving help versus having someone else do it for you.

There are many of us in the CPLP community who guide / coach /mentor people through the CPLP certification process; people who have done so for many years.

This topic is as old as the certification itself.

For equally as long - since the very beginning - we've (the collective CPLP community who helps shephard other CPLP candidates along) have worked (and continue to work) with the ASTD Certification Institute (ASTD CI) to clearly define the boundaries of assistance.

(Not convinced? Write to the ASTD Certification Institute and ask: certification@astd.org)

The following examples illustrate how we seek help in other areas of our lives - areas where we don't think twice about asking for help - and each has practical application to the CPLP:

  • SAT or ACT prep courses / mentoring programs to help kids improve their performance on the college exams.

  • Peer review of your paper before you submit it for class - or a whitepaper for work.

  • Asking someone to proofread your work / communication / paper to look for spelling or grammatical errors.

  • Name a sport - any sport - how does a coach help you improve your performance?
Crossing the line: The line is crossed when someone else starts writing responses for you, or shares experiences from the CPLP Raters Workshop that is confidential to the scoring process.

Here's the bottom line: My company - Owl's Ledge - gets paid for its CPLP support services, just as Kaplan gets paid for SAT prep and Sylvan gets paid for mentoring kids for school.

There are other options / opportunities for help - including dedicated folks in the CPLP community who volunteer their time to help CPLP candidates succeed.

How to connect with them? Check with your local ASTD chapter.

The point is - if you need help, get help.

This is especially true for CPLP candidates who have been unsuccessful in the process. Yes, it's true - for some, certification may be premature. But for others - it could simply be that you're so far into the weeds that you can't clearly see what's tripping you up.

And an extra pair of eyes - from a coach or a peer - would be the difference between continuing to struggle and achieving CPLP certification.

LearnTrends 2009 - Wednesday Poll

FABULOUS time @ LearnTrends 2009 today & yesterday!

Thank you to all the organizers, moderators & speakers. :-)

We dished about a lot of tools today - and I brought up http://www.polleverywhere.com/ - which has been a great tool for attendee engagement during my conference presentations.

(Yes, yes - in the ASTD community too. I just presented at the ASTD Leaders Conference and had great success with technology & my chapter leader peers!)

I was also pretty vocal on the chat channel that we (learning & performance pros) should be modeling technology - and appropriate use/application of the tools.

So in an effort to walk the talk...

For those also in attendance, I'm curious -

Name one thing from yesterday /today's LearnTrends 2009 you can put into action immediately?

(Poll results below.)

Want to submit a response?

Do ONE of the following:

  • tweet @poll enter 111231 then your message - OR

10 Steps to Successful Teams Released on Amazon.com!

Yay cake! My first book as a contributing author is now available on Amazon.com!

Here's what publisher ASTD Press has to say:

10 Steps to Successful Teams is designed to be a practical resource for both team leaders and team members. It can be used as a guide for the entire team, whether it is a new team or an existing team trying to work better together. There are tools to help team leaders manage conflict and improve communication. You will find individual team member and leader self-assessments to help focus the team on getting results and identifying areas for improvement. One key feature of the book is a collection of tips for both team members and team leaders which are designed to give advice on what works in team environments and how to avoid common pitfalls.

Here's what author Renie McClay (@reniemcclay) has to say:

Thanks to contributors Trish Uhl, Ken Phillips, Lanie Jordan, Deb Taber, Louann Swedberg, Terrence Donahue, Cary Dudczak, Julie Jacques, Gerald Haman (@SolutionMan), and more!

>>>

I'm proud to report that the book made its first conference debut at the Sales & Marketing Training (SMT): Center for Sales Excellence Conference in Orlando, Florida October 14-16.

Ken Phillips & I took it out for its first author signing at the ASTD Leaders Conference (ALC) in Arlington, Virginia just last week! (BTW - Ken's Team Member Self-Assessment on pg 86 is the real deal!)

For those who attended the ALC Ship to Shore session that Kim Seeger (@SolutionSource) & I facilitated at ALC, we used material from this book for our session on team communication & collaboration.

How cool is that?!
>>>

What's next?

I've got another new book with Renie McClay coming out in February 2010 - right around Valentine's Day! - Fortify Your Sales Force: Leading & Training Exceptional Sales Teams.
